The terrorist attack on the bicycle race in Tajikistan: US citizens were killed

As a result of a car hitting tourists on July 29 in the Dangara region, four people were killed. Two of the dead were US citizens. President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon expressed condolences to US President Donald Trump over the tragic death of his compatriots. The US Embassy suggests that the collision of a car with a group of cyclists, which led to the death of foreign tourists, including US citizens, is a “deliberate attack”.

This was reported on Monday by local media with reference to Jeff Ridenor, an employee of the information department of the US Embassy in Tajikistan, writes Interfax.

“We express our condolences to the families of the victims. Although the investigation is still ongoing, there is evidence that this was a (deliberate) attack. We condemn the cruelty of the attackers, and we understand that they in no way represent the kind and hospitable people of Tajikistan,” Asia Plus quotes Ridenor.

As a result of a car collision, four foreign tourists were killed - in addition to two Americans, these were citizens of Switzerland and Holland, writes Air force. Three more tourists were injured. The car disappeared from the scene. Local media reported that the suspects were armed with knives and attacked tourists after the car crashed into a bicycle group. On Monday, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon sent condolences to the United States, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

The Americans were touring Central Asia in a group with other tourists from different countries.

In a statement, the US Embassy in Dushanbe said: “We can confirm that two American cyclists were killed in the Dangara area on July 29. For privacy reasons, we are unable to share additional information."

“The US Embassy is working closely with the authorities of Tajikistan regarding the incident in Dangara,” said the representative of the department.

Swiss, Dutch and French officials have not yet published comments on this issue.

The President of Tajikistan also sent a telegram of condolences to King of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Willem-Alexander and President of the Swiss Confederation, Alain Berse, whose citizens also died as a result of the incident. In a telegram, the president assured his colleagues that those responsible would be held criminally liable.

“The relevant services of the country are taking all necessary measures to identify and bring to justice those responsible for committing this cruel act. I ask you, Your Excellency, to convey our deep condolences and feelings of empathy to the families and friends of the victims,” the telegram says.

On Monday, Tajik law enforcement agencies announced the discovery of a group that carried out a hit on foreign tourists on July 29 near the city of Dangara, in the south of the country. One of them was detained, two were liquidated during the resistance, and the “Interception” plan was announced to capture the fourth, the press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan reported.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that on July 29 in 15: 30, on the territory of the Jamoat (village council) of Sebiston in the Dangara district of the Khatlon region, seven foreign cyclists were hit; the driver, who committed the run, disappeared from the scene, the report says.

It is noted that as a result, three tourists were killed at the scene, and another foreign citizen died in the hospital in Dangara district. Three other foreign nationals who received minor bodily injuries were given medical assistance and moral and psychological support.
