Shark bites off head of teenager in Jamaica
A 16-year-old boy was brutally mauled by a shark while swimming alone off the coast of Jamaica. Such incidents are extremely rare near the Caribbean island, writes New York Post.
Divers found the headless body of Jamari Reed on the morning of August 27, the day after he went missing while spearfishing near the popular tourist town of Montego Bay.
In addition, the teenager was missing his left arm, and the rest of his body was badly mutilated, eyewitnesses told the Jamaica Observer.
"I can't believe he went out to sea alone yesterday and it ended so horribly. It's a tragedy for us," Jamari's heartbroken father, Michael Reed, told the local publication.

A tiger shark was spotted in the tropical waters where Jamari's hand was found, leading rescuers to suspect that a marine predator was responsible for the tragedy.
Divers and fishermen tried to shoot the "big shark" but missed, one witness said. Rescuers hope to extract Jamari's head from the fish's stomach before it's too late.
Police say the high school student had been spearfishing alone since the morning of Aug. 26, around the same time the tragedy occurred. Jamari was an avid spearfisherman, although his father did not approve of his son taking up the dangerous sport.
"We fought with him about it all the time. He didn't hunt out of need, he just hunted because he enjoyed spearfishing. And this is what happened. Can you believe it?" Michael Reed lamented.
Experts suspect the man-eating shark was following a cruise ship when it spotted the teen.

"When ships come close you have to be careful if you're scuba diving. It turns out a shark can easily bite off a diver's arm or even their head. It's crazy," said Falmouth Fishermen's Charity president Fritz Christie.
Shark attacks in Jamaica are extremely rare.
According to the Florida-based International Shark Attack Monitor, which has been tracking shark attacks since 1749, there have been only three unprovoked shark attacks recorded near Jamaica.
