Taylor Farms is recalling jalapeño popper products sold at Walmart and Target because they may be contaminated with salmonella.
Taylor Farms, an American agricultural company whose products were previously linked to fatal cyclosporosis, has announced a recall of several prepared foods containing jalapeño peppers. The recall was made due to a salmonella outbreak caused by this ingredient, according to reports. CBS News.
The products in question include pico de gallo salsa and guacamole, which were distributed to retailers in 26 states, including Walmart and Target. The company announced the news on August 9. Taylor Farms emphasized that it currently has no known illnesses related to these products.
The company said it voluntarily recalled the prepared foods after the pepper's supplier, Coast Citrus Distributors, issued a recall of fresh jalapeños due to a salmonella risk.
"A farmer in the Mexican state of Sinaloa who supplied produce to Coast Citrus Distributors has been identified as a potential source of contamination in this outbreak," the statement read. The company added that it is no longer purchasing produce from this supplier and is switching to alternative sources.
According to the Mayo Clinic, salmonella causes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 8 to 72 hours after infection. Most people recover within a few days to a week without treatment.
The expiration date for the recalled products is August 16, Taylor Farms clarified.
Shoppers are advised to throw away food
Walmart said customer safety remains its priority.
"After receiving information about a recall, we promptly remove such products from shelves and block their sale at checkout and online. We are working closely with the supplier, and customers who have these products should stop using them," the company said.
Trader Joe's has announced a recall of 668 packages of Fiesta Shrimp Salad because it contains salsa that may have been made with the recalled jalapeño. Customers are advised to throw the product away or return it to any Trader Joe's store for a refund.
Taylor Farms also urged customers to dispose of all recalled products.
“Refunds are available at the point of purchase,” the company noted.
Whole Foods said it had removed all recalled products from its shelves.
"The safety of our customers is our top priority. Anyone who purchased these items should throw them away and request a refund," the chain stated.
Stop & Shop reported that the recall affected two of its products: chicken wrap and pico de gallo salsa. These items were removed from sale on August 8.
"Customers should discard these products and contact any Stop & Shop store or customer service for a full refund," the statement said.
