In New York, taxi drivers kidnapped immigrants demanding ransoms

Carlos Hernandez faces life in prison, he will be sentenced on Monday, November 18, in the federal court in Bridgeport.

The lawyer of 56-year-old Hernandez asks the judge for mercy and sentence, much less than a life sentence.

Hernandez and his colleagues at Bridgeport cabbies, Francisco Betancourt and Lucilo Cabrera, were convicted last year by a jury for crimes of kidnapping, extortion, and conspiracy.

Prosecutors say the scheme involved defrauding immigrants by taking them into taxis outside an immigration center in New York and driving them in circles until they or their relatives paid a ransom, usually about $1000. .

Betancourt was recently sentenced to 14 years in prison, and Cabrera is still awaiting sentencing.
