Taco Bell will give away free tacos to customers over the next five Tuesdays, reports Lifehacker.

To get your free taco go to almost any Taco Bell establishment August 15, 22, 29, September 5 and 12 and say: “Give me a free Doritos Locos Taco” (“Give me a free Doritos Locos Taco”). You don't need to pay.

This "Free Taco Tuesday" ad campaign is the result of a legal snafu that has been going on all summer involving an alleged trademark dispute with Taco John's. The phrase "Taco Tuesday" is now free to use after Taco John's dropped its trademark on the popular phrase, reports NPG.

Taco John's has owned the trademark since 1989 in all US states except New Jersey. Taco Bell petitioned the US Patent and Trademark Office to have it repealed, arguing that no one should have rights to the catchphrase.

In a statement released in June, Taco John's relented and said they were "lovers, not fighters."

"We've always been proud of our Taco Tuesday, but paying millions of dollars to lawyers to protect our brand just doesn't feel right," said Taco John CEO Jim Creel.

September 12 Bell promises spend up to $5 million to refund "some of" the bills of anyone who uses DoorDash to buy Mexican food at any participating retailer.

They haven't released the full details of all of this yet, so there's still time to plan a mid-September taco party.

Taco Bell and the Taco Bell Foundation have also pledged to donate $1 million "to support the young people who make, sell, eat and love tacos." This promotion is in response to Taco John's $40 donation to the restaurant's children.
