“Our goal is to raise $7,4 billion, and any additional dollar or euro we receive will help us save lives. The importance of vaccines is more evident today than ever. But we need vaccines for more than just diseases like measles, diarrhea and pneumonia. It is also necessary for GAVI (the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) to deliver coronavirus vaccines to developing countries. We are raising money not only within the GAVI budget, but also have opened a new fund that will purchase coronavirus vaccines for poor countries,” Gates said.

He believes that healthcare providers should be the first to receive the vaccine.

“This is because they need to continue to do their job, save lives and not be exposed to the serious risk they are facing now. Then there are police officers and first responders—essential workers. When they are protected, then it will be possible to move on to the rest of the people,” said the billionaire. “And if the vaccine works effectively in older people, which is the main criterion, then it will need to be sent to nursing homes, prisons, homeless shelters to reach those who are at greatest risk. This needs to be done on a global scale. Fortunately, we are going to build several factories and hope that production volumes will be high. But vaccine distribution will be an interesting challenge.”

“We work with all pharmaceutical companies that have sufficient production capacity. We tell them that even if your vaccine is not selected, can we use your capacity around the world to start producing that vaccine immediately. And it’s amazing how pharmaceutical companies agree with the words “even if our vaccine is not the best, we will provide our factories,” says Gates.

He believes that if all the plants join forces, there will be no shortage of vaccines.

“If you have one plant producing 300 million doses a year, then the demand will be very high. There will be strict conditions, including who provided the funding and where the worst epidemic situation is. If we launch production at 10 factories, we will be able to produce 3 billion vaccines per year. Then there will be no special restrictions, and the main problem will not be production, but delivery of the vaccine,” the billionaire explained.

WHO wants companies to publicize their patents and provide open access to any vaccine information. But there are those who say that licensing is enough, and let the creator retain intellectual rights. Billionaire supports WHO more.

“Intellectual rights are meaningless. A vaccine is required that has undergone clinical trials for safety and effectiveness. These companies are committed to helping the world. They don't do it with the idea that they will benefit from the vaccine. They know it's necessary for everyone. And no matter what conspiracy theories people come up with, the pharmaceutical industry is at its best. For example, AstraZeneca, Gates said. — Similar things can be said about all companies, but I’ll take it as an example. We advised the Oxford University scientists to work with a pharmaceutical company because they are excellent specialists, they work quickly, but in terms of clinical trials and working with manufacturers, they need a pharmaceutical company, and they chose AstraZeneca. The combination of their abilities was simply incredible.”

“Our foundation is working with AstraZeneca, and we ask them what is the plan for India, what is the plan for China. So if the creation of a vaccine is successful, which we hope for, then in this case there is already a global plan for its mass production. AstraZeneca said it had no plans to profit from it. The company just wants to help the world,” Gates added.

But if people think it's a scam or that the vaccine is harmful and don't want to get vaccinated, then the disease will continue to kill people, Gates warned. “So I’m a little worried about all these crazy ideas.” And it’s somewhat surprising that some of these theories are about me. We donate money to create the tool, write checks to pharmaceutical companies. We happen to have a lot of pharmaceutical experts in our foundation, and we are seen as an honest broker between the government and the companies when it comes to choosing the best method.”

Most likely, these theories are connected with the words of the billionaire that it is necessary to know who has been vaccinated and who has not, and how this will be monitored.

“Yes, if we talk about the smallpox vaccine, it left a scar because it was very powerful, and in the crowd you could see people with such a vaccine. But to completely get rid of the disease, everyone needs to be vaccinated. Therefore, we can say that a miracle happened, since in 1980 this disease was declared defeated,” Gates said. “So if we talk about voluntary registration, then yes, we are thinking about how to protect children from the disease, but this does not imply any chips or anything like that. Sometimes you want to laugh because of some theories.”

He said that it is still unclear exactly how vaccination will be monitored in all countries, but they are already trying to solve the problem.

“In rich countries, information is documented, but in poor countries, data is recorded in paper documents. They are gradually moving towards digital technologies, but not fast enough. In India, we conduct test programs where data is stored in mobile phones so that specialists can understand whether a particular village has been covered,” the billionaire finally said.
