Solar eclipse glasses: how to protect your eyes inexpensively and effectively

On April 8, residents of the United States (from Texas to New York) will experience a rare sight - total solar eclipse. You can watch the Moon completely cover the disk of the Sun only with special glasses or through film filters designed for this.

The process of “collision” of the Moon’s shadow on the Sun must be observed with glasses. You can take them off and look at this phenomenon with unprotected eyes only at the moment of a total eclipse. Then, taking off your glasses, you will see the solar corona, the outer atmosphere. This light is a million times weaker than on the surface of the Sun, so it is absolutely safe.

But before or after the moment of total eclipse, looking at the Star without special glasses or filter film is unsafe - you risk getting irreversible eye damage. Dark spots and distorted vision from a photoreceptor burn can last for several weeks or months, or even a lifetime. In general, you shouldn't risk watching the eclipse without protection.
