The court allowed Trump to punish the city of "refuge" for illegal immigrants

US President Donald Trump's administration has won the first legal victory in its decades-long battle to punish "sanctuary" cities for violating federal immigration laws. Writes about this New York Post.

A commission of three judges from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a nationwide injunction prohibiting the Department of Justice from financially rewarding cities and districts that cooperate with the US Immigration and Customs authorities during the deportation.

Los Angeles (California) officials sued to stop the United States Department of Justice (COPS) program awarding cities cooperating with the immigration authorities, saying that this amounts to federal coercion.

But in its decision, the court ruled that the Trump administration has the right to encourage cities that support the policies it promotes.

“Sanctuary cities are deliberately releasing criminals from their prisons and returning them to our communities rather than working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),” White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said. “This ruling overturns the unlawful decision that allowed the sanctuary city policy to be implemented.”

“Sanctuary” cities prohibit local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities and reporting to them about illegal immigrants detained for minor crimes.

Refuge cities have long been called up by Trump dissatisfaction. A few days after taking office in the 2017 year, Trump signed a decree according to which federal funding for refuge cities ceased. True decree immediately disputed in a court. He is still considered unconstitutional, although the Trump administration continues to appeal this decision.
