MH17 trial: US may have Boeing missile launch footage, but they will not be declassified

The court in the case of MH17 asked to declassify satellite images, which, possibly, capture the moment of the launch of the rocket on the Boeing, which was carrying out flight MH17 in the sky over the Donbass in July 2014, writes Air force.

The prosecutor said that a similar request was sent to the United States in 2014. In response, Washington sent a memorandum (official document) with a description of the images and related technical information.

Then the Dutch Chief Prosecutor for Terrorism was given the opportunity to check how correctly the information was stated in the memorandum. The prosecutor was able to personally review classified American photographs and compare them with the description in the memorandum.

“The prosecutor concluded that the information in the memorandum was confirmed by other sources with which he had reviewed,” the judge presiding over the hearing said today.

A memorandum submitted by the United States and the opinion of the Netherlands Attorney for Terrorism were attached to the case file. However, the satellite images available to the United States themselves were not declassified, which means that the general public will not see them.

“We are presumably talking about images from secret US military satellites. The US does not want to share their raw data, as this would reveal the technical capabilities of such satellites. Therefore, the Americans shared the data that these satellites collected through a Dutch security official who personally saw the original information,” says Hristo Grozev, a representative of the Bellingcat investigative group.

Earlier, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), which is leading the international investigation into the crash of Boeing MH17, concluded that the plane was shot down by a missile fired from a Buk anti-aircraft missile system near the village of Snezhnoye. At the same time, investigators are confident that the missile system was delivered to Ukraine from Russia.

Four people are accused of involvement in the crash of the aircraft by the Netherlands prosecutor:

• Igor Girkin (Strelkov), citizen of Russia, Minister of Defense of the self-proclaimed DNR, retired FSB officer
• Sergey Dubinsky, Russian citizen, retired senior officer of the GRU of the Russian army
• Oleg Pulatov, citizen of Russia, lieutenant colonel of the reserve of the airborne forces of the Russian army
• Leonid Kharchenko, a citizen of Ukraine, the commander of the intelligence unit of the GRU self-proclaimed DNR

Russian authorities have consistently denied any involvement in the death of the aircraft.

The court passes according to the laws of the Netherlands, since most of the 298 people on board the aircraft were citizens of this country.
