The rape victim in the US will pay $ 1 billion

In 2012, Hope Cheston was sexually assaulted by an armed guard in a residential complex near Atlanta, Georgia, where she came to visit a friend.

She was 14 years old, security guard Brandon Lamar Zachary was 22 years old, writes The Washington Post.

He was convicted of rape and sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment, but, according to Ceston, the security company that hired him never contacted her and did not apologize for what had happened.

She admitted that all the time since the attack fought with doubt and regret.

"Every victim goes through these thoughts: 'I should have done this, I should have done this, I shouldn't have been there,'" Cheston said.

Jurors in Clayton County, Georgia, awarded her $1 billion in damages, a move that is unusual in such cases, but Cheston said the amount was commensurate with the pain and suffering the victim endured.

The security company that hired a rapist must pay the girl money.

Cheston initially filed a lawsuit against a security company called the Crime Prevention Agency, as well as against the residential complex where the crime occurred, and the company managing it.

In her lawsuit, she stated that due to her emotional distress and depression.

However, the court discharged the residential complex and the company managing it, therefore the whole amount of compensation must be paid to the girl by the security company that hired the abuser.

From the moment of the crime, the security company changed its name; Ceston's attorney Chris Stewart said that her client would hardly be able to receive the full amount, since the company cannot afford to pay such compensation. But, according to him, the very fact of creating such a precedent is important.

He noted that this is a “huge victory” - not only for his client, but also for other victims of sexual violence.

Ceston, who is now 20 years old, said that it was very difficult for her to regain her confidence and fight for justice, so she did not file a lawsuit against the company right away.
