Students, volunteers, girl bartender, policeman: who died in a Californian bar

As a result of the shooting in the bar of the city of Towse Oaks, northwest of Los Angeles, at least 12 people, including one policeman, were killed, police said. Another 10 man was injured. The attacker was a retired marine, he committed suicide. ForumDaily found out who else died in the bar other than the shooter himself.

Among the dead was police sergeant Ron Helus, who served 29 for years and was about to retire. He received several bullet wounds and died in hospital. Helus tried to get into the bar with another policeman, and they opened fire on him.

“We are all sad, I want to cry. He died a hero. He went to save lives, to save other people,” Ventura County Sheriff Jeff Dean said.

18, a young girl from Napa, California, was a graduate of Vintage High School. She wrote on Facebook that she hopes to get a master's degree in English literature. She also wanted to participate in a vocal music program.

Cody Coffman of Camarillo, California, turned 22 of the year. He was going to join the army, said his father, Jason Coffman, who confirmed his son’s death in an interview with CNN reporters.

A friend, Sarah Deson, said she survived the bar thanks to Coffman's quick response.

“He protected everyone,” Ms. Deson said. “He stood up and shouted: “Run!”

He was called "boots" for his love of cowboy shoes and hats, which he wore almost always when he was not wearing a football uniform. He has two brothers, 6 and 8 years, his mother is waiting for the birth of his daughter.

Moriset has worked as a bartender at Borderline Bar & Grill for over a year, but was just about to move to a new location. It was not uncommon for bar patrons to treat her to coffee or snacks while she poured drinks. The bar that Moriset worked at was directly opposite the entrance. Apparently, the girl was one of the first victims of Ian David Long.

Daniel Manrique was a Marine veteran who never stopped supporting other men and women who served in the United States military. He worked as a program manager for Team RWB, a veterans support organization.

In social networks, he often talked about his activities, including collecting money for veterans, he organized surfing for disabled veterans and many sporting events. Manrique was an avid baseball fan and loved the Los Angeles Dodgers.

48-year-old Shawn Adler was a high school coach in Simi Valley, California, but he recently completed a career as a coach and opened a cafe called Rivalry Roasters, fulfilling an old dream, according to his childhood friend. He also moonlighted as a bouncer at Borderline Bar & Grill.

Adler’s death was confirmed by his sister, Chris Curtis, co-owner of Rivalry Roasters. She said that Adler had children and that he worked at a bar to help pay bills.

Telemakhos Orfanos

After graduating from school in Thousand Oaks, Orfanos served in the Navy, after which he returned to his hometown. In 2017, he traveled to Las Vegas for the Route 91 Harvest festival. It was there that Stephen Paddock committed the most massive murder in US history. 58 people died, hundreds were injured. Orphanos was one of those who survived.

In an interview with journalists, his mother said that she was not asking to pray for her son: “I have only a few words - control the sale of weapons now, now, immediately!”

Dingman's social networks are full of photos and videos of his Ford Ranger 1993 of the year, which he drives off-road in southern California. In Borderline, he rested with his friend Jake Dunham, who also died while shooting.

He did not live to see the 21 anniversary for a few days. His family asked journalists about privacy, so very little is known about him: he was born in Santa Barbara, where he studied photography and worked at a local hotel.

What is known about the attacker

Police later reported that 28-year-old Ian David Long, who served in the US Marine Corps and was transferred to the reserve, committed the attack.

Jeff Dean, the sheriff of Ventura County, told reporters that the police had already come home to Long in April of this year: then he had signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Another long contact with the police occurred after he became involved in an accident, Dean added.

According to preliminary data, Long entered the bar and opened random fire with a Glock pistol. His motive has not yet been established.
