In the closet of a student from North Carolina a stranger secretly lived for several days
Strange sounds, missing clothes and unexplained handprints in different places in the apartment - all this seemed more than suspicious to a student from North Carolina. Until it turned out that the “ghost” was a strange man who was hiding in her closet and, apparently, regularly changed into her clothes.
At first, Maddie, a student at the University of North Carolina, who lives in a separate apartment off-campus, suspected something was wrong when her personal things began to disappear. Fox8. Objects disappeared, and handprints remained on the bathroom wall.
On Saturday, she revealed the secret of what (or whom) the girl and her roommates considered a ghost.
“I just heard a knock in my closet. It sounded like there was a raccoon in there,” Maddie said. “I asked: “Who’s there?” And they said, “Oh, my name is Drew.” I opened the door - and he was there, and he had all my clothes on. My socks. My shoes. And he had a bag full of my clothes."
Police reported that 30-year-old Andrew Swofford was a "ghost". He appeared in court on Monday through a video link from the prison of Guilford County.
Maddie said she called her boyfriend, and while she waited for his arrival, she spoke with Swofford to distract him.
“He's trying on my hat. He goes into the bathroom and looks in the mirror and then says, 'You're really beautiful, can I hug you?'" she recalls. “But he didn’t touch me.”
The main question the students are trying to answer is how the person got inside. According to them, the doors were always locked and the locks were not broken. What really scares the girls is that this is not the first time strange men have found themselves in their apartment.
“There were two guys in the living room one day,” Maddie said. Then the girls notified the leasing office. The employee confirmed that they changed the locks but did not file a police report.
Now Maddie and her neighbor say they have had enough.
“Last night I didn’t feel safe. “I slept with my neighbor in her bed,” she said. - I can't stay here. My closet stinks. Every time I walk into a room I find myself in a bad atmosphere. I'm ready to move out."
Representatives of the property management company Burkely Communities said they are trying to figure out how this could have happened.
Swofford was sent to Guilford County Jail on bail of 26 000 US dollars on 14 criminal charges, including theft of property and personal data.
