Shooter in Texas killed 5 people: he is still at large and armed with a rifle

According to police, five people died as a result of shooting in a house in Texas. The suspect, armed with an AR-15 rifle, is still at large. The edition told in more detail ABC News.

The incident took place around 23:30 p.m. April 28 local time. Officers from the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office received a call about harassment in Cleveland, Texas.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they found several victims shot to death in the house.

The youngest victim of the shooting was 8 years old and two female victims were found in the bedroom lying on top of two surviving children.

The suspect is a Mexican man armed with an AR-15 rifle and under the influence of alcohol, police said. They are looking for a Hispanic man, approximately 5 feet 8 inches (172 cm) tall, who was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black shirt and work boots, and has short black hair.

“The man fired in his yard, which can be seen from the shells that are lying there,” the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office said.

When the police arrived at the scene, at least 10 people were in the house. All of the victims were between the ages of 8 and 40.

Local residents in the Cleveland area have been ordered to "remain inside and stay away" from the crime scene until an investigation is completed.

Police have not released the identity, age or possible relationship of the victims to the suspect, but have confirmed that all of the shootings occurred at the same home. All of the victims are from Honduras: four were pronounced dead at the scene and the fifth died in hospital.

This is an active crime scene as well as an investigation. Police said that although the suspect is on the run, it is unlikely that he is currently in the area.

Sheriff Greg Kuipers of the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office said, "All of the victims were shot in the neck and above, almost execution-style, mostly in the head."

Police have identified the shooter and believe he is about 10-12 miles from the crime scene, Kuipers said, but have not yet been able to find him.

“We are getting closer to him every minute. We know who he is,” Capers noted. “He is from Mexico, while the victims are from Honduras.”

It is reported that the shooter went to the house where the tragedy occurred after the neighbors asked him to calm down because the child could not sleep.

“I understand that the victims went to the fence and asked the neighbor not to shoot, as they had a small child who was trying to sleep. And he said that in his yard he would do whatever he wanted, ”Kipers suggested.

It is known that the perpetrator fired his AR-15 rifle in the courtyard of his house, in which the police found two more weapons during a search.

Capers admits that some of the adults killed were protecting their children. In the bedroom of the house, the police found two bodies on top of the unharmed victims, covered in blood.

“In my opinion, they were actually trying to take care of the children and keep them alive,” Kuipers said.

Neighborhood resident Veronica Pineda said she was used to neighbors firing guns in the area.

“They always shoot,” she assured. “People call the police every time, but it’s no use.”

According to her, the neighbors often fired firearms on weekends and holidays, the sound of gunshots at night was normal.

“We were in bed, and my children (I have two children) were scared, but we reassured them, saying that it’s normal, they always shoot,” she said.

She said she did not know the alleged shooter well.
