Shooting in Texas: what is known about the dead

A postal worker, an 15-year-old girl, a US Army veteran, and a father of two children are among the seven people who were recognized as victims of mass shooting in West Texas on Saturday, August 31. This is the second state fire in less than a month.

According to authorities, a man armed with "AR-type weapons" escaped from a transport stop before firing on random people in Odessa and Midland, and then was shot dead by police. Age of victims from 15 to 57 years.

Mary Granados

An employee of the postal service Mary Granados, whose mail vehicle was allegedly abducted by a suspect during the crime, was identified by the family as one of the victims.

Granados's twin sister, Rosie, told CNN that she was talking on the phone with 29-year-old Mary when she heard her sudden scream.

"It was very painful. I wanted to help her and could not. I thought she was scared by a dog or something else. I turned to her, but she didn’t answer, " — said Rosie.

Edwin Peregrino

According to his family, Edwin Peregrino was standing near his parents' house in Odessa when he was shot dead. His sister told The Washington Post that his brother heard gunfire. He thought it was somewhere far away, and went out into the yard to investigate the situation. When Edwin stood on the street, the shooter drove by and opened fire, killing the guy.

“It happened at our place. Do you think that is safe at home ?, — said Erici Peregrino, 23, whose husband was also wounded in the attack. “You’re not even safe in your own home.”

Leila Hernandez

According to relatives, Leyla Hernandez was with her family when they bought a new car for her older brother. 15-year-old girl mortally wounded near a car dealership.

“I suppose he was just looking for someone to kill,” — Leyla’s grandmother, Nora Leiva, told The Washington Post about a gunman who also wounded Xnumx’s brother Leila Nathan. Nathan reportedly hugged his sister when they shot her.

Joseph Griffith

40-year-old Joseph Griffith was in his car with his wife and two children when they shot him, his sister Carla Byrne said.

“This maniac stopped next to him and shot him, took his life, killed my little brother, — she told The Washington Post. “We are so broken.”

Griffith’s wife, Becky, wrote in a Sunday morning Facebook post that she couldn’t fall asleep, and urged people to attend church to pray.

“I didn’t sleep most of the night, and I would like to ask all of you to stand up and go to church, — she said. “Pray for those who are still fighting for their lives, pray for those who are devastated by what they saw yesterday... Take the word of God into your heart and love one another.”

Cameron Brown

Cameron Brown was also reportedly in his car when he was shot dead outside Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.

Brown, an army veteran who served in Afghanistan, was an employee of Standard Safety & Supply, an Odessa-based ambulance and fire protection service, according to the state of Arizona.

He was reportedly in the company’s pickup truck when they shot him.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a member of our team, — Standard Safety & Supply said in a statement confirming Brown's death. “We ask that the privacy of our team member and his family be respected during this most difficult time.”

Rodolfo Arco

56-year-old Rodolfo Arco was driving home from work when he was shot in the head and killed, according to NBC News. He left 20-year-old wife Bari Arco and three daughters aged 3, 6 and 23 years.

Arco, who ran the transportation business, moved to Odessa from Las Vegas almost a year ago, his sister said. Maria Arco said her brother decided to move to Texas after the anniversary of the mass shooting at the Las Vegas Country Music Festival.

“He felt that Odessa — this is what you need, — she said. “He sold everything in Vegas and moved there in hopes that it would be safer for him and his family.”

The head of the Odessa police, Mikhail Gerke, who refused to give the identity of the militant by name at a press conference on Sunday, said that in addition to the dead, 22 people were injured, including three law enforcement officers. The motive for the attack is not yet known.

According to authorities, the youngest survivor is an 17-month-old girl who received shrapnel wounds to her face and chest.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott read the text, which he said he received from the girl’s mother at a press conference on Sunday.

“Tomorrow the child will undergo surgery to remove fragments from her chest, correct lips and mouth. We thank God for her healing and appreciate the ongoing prayers. ”
