Shooting in a synagogue in California: heroes who saved others despite their injuries

The Rabbi of the Habdad Synagogue in Poway, California, where shooting occurred, Israel Goldstein was wounded in the arm, but continued to console the congregation, writes New York Times.

A parishioner, Minu Avari, said that Goldstein “did not leave the congregation until he finished his sermon, he reassured people, called for steadfastness and did not allow panic.”

An 57-year-old rabbi was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery. According to the trauma surgeon, he is likely to lose the index finger of his right hand.

Rabbi was born in Brooklyn and studied at Rabbi College of America in Morristown, New Jersey.

His father, Rabbi Yosef Goldstein, moved to the area in 1954. In an interview, he said that he moved into the same building as Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the spiritual leader of tens of thousands of Hasidic Jews around the world, in 1954.

Junior Goldstein moved to Poway soon after graduating from rabbinical school in 1991.

But not only Goldstein turned out to be a hero that day. 34 year old Almog Pepper was wounded in the leg when he hid the children who were under fire in a safe place - immediately after the start of the attack.

Witnesses said that 34-year-old Pepper grabbed the children during the shooting and ran with them to the nearest exit.

“He grabbed all the children in his arms and just ran to the exit. Then he saw another child. He came back for him, grabbed and started to run, and just then the shooter wounded him in the leg. But Almogh didn’t care, ”witnesses recall.

Pepper is in the hospital and receives the necessary medical care.
