Shooting at a bar in Southern California: at least 12 people died. VIDEO

As a result of the shooting in the bar of the city of Towse Oaks, northwest of Los Angeles, at least 12 people, including one policeman, were killed, police said.

Shooting reportedly began at 23.20 local time at the Borderline Bar and Grill.

The man who arranged the shooting was found dead inside the bar. Motives are not yet known. Supposedly, he committed suicide, but the police have not confirmed this yet.

Police told CNN that at least 12 people were killed in the attack, including 29-year-old local sheriff's deputy Ron Helus. Several other people were injured, but the exact number of those injured is unknown as many went to hospitals themselves to receive medical attention.

The bar was a student evening of country music. The room was about 200 people.

“When deputies arrived, they heard gunshots,” Ventura County Sheriff’s spokesman Eric Bushow said.

The slain police officer was named as Sergeant Ron Helus, who had served for 29 years and was about to retire. He received several bullet wounds and died in the hospital. Helus tried to break into the bar with another police officer and was shot at.

“We are all sad, I want to cry. He died a hero. He went to save lives, to save other people,” Ventura County Sheriff Jeff Dean said.

One of the victims told KTLA in an interview that the sounds of shots resembled explosions of flappers.

“We just fell to the floor, screams were heard everywhere. My friend was a DJ, so she turned off the music,” he said.

Clubgoer Taylor Whittler said: “I was on the dance floor and heard shots. I looked around, and then everyone started screaming - on the floor!”

“Severe panic began, everyone jumped up, people were attacking me. I was still lying on the floor, but some guy grabbed me and pulled me outside,” she said.

According to the visitors of the bar, panic started in the room. To get outside, people smashed windows with chairs. Some were hiding in the toilets.

It is reported that the attacker was wearing dark clothes and, in addition to firearms, may have used smoke bombs.

The attacker reportedly made an order of 30 shots, then committed suicide.

Ventura County Sheriff Jeff Dean identified the fighter as Marine Corps veteran David Ian Long, who was described as "acting a bit irrational" when police were called to his house earlier this year to investigate the unrest. He lived in Newbury Park, in Thousand Oaks.

He was armed with a Glock 21.45-caliber pistol, which he bought legally.

Ventura County Sheriff Jeff Dean said that everything inside the bar was covered in blood.

He said that the first policemen arrived at the scene three minutes after the call.

“This is a terrible incident,” Dean said. “This is part of the horror that is happening in our country and around the world. I think it’s impossible to find any logic or meaning in this.”

US President Donald Trump tweeted on Thursday that he had received a "full report" of the incident. He also praised the quick response of law enforcement agencies and offered condolences to the families of the victims.
