Stephen Seagal will promote tourism in annexed Crimea
The formerly popular actor Steven Seagal, who has been the special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry for more than a year, will advertise the tourism project “Golden Ring of the Bosporan Kingdom.” The project was invented by the state-owned Russian Geographical Society and aims to promote tourism in annexed Crimea, despite the fact that the peninsula has been under EU and US sanctions since 2014.
At a meeting of the board of trustees of the Russian Geographical Society in April 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the “Golden Ring of the Bosporan Kingdom” “one of the most important tourism projects that can show Russia to the world in all its diversity,” writes Present Tense.
Seagal said that ancient history and culture are of great interest to him and he is ready to be an “ambassador” of a project that “promotes respect for historical heritage.”
“Golden Ring” includes more than 35 objects in 12 cities of Crimea, as well as in the Krasnodar Territory and the Rostov region of Russia. “In 2019, tourists from Austria, Slovenia, Germany and China have already tried the route,” said the Russian Geographical Society.
Seagal is an action star of the 80s and a longtime friend of Vladimir Putin. He visited Russia several times, including visiting the annexed Crimea with members of the Night Wolves biker club. In November 2016, Putin signed a decree granting Seagal Russian citizenship and personally issued him a passport, and the actor then declared: “I am Russian,” despite his lack of Russian roots.

In August 2018, the actor was appointed special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry for Russian-American humanitarian relations. His responsibilities include “promoting the further development of Russian-American relations in the humanitarian sphere, including interaction in the field of culture, art, public and youth exchanges.” The Russian Foreign Ministry claims that the former action star does not receive a salary from the department.
Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea peninsula in March 2014 following a so-called referendum held in the presence of armed men in military uniform. International organizations recognized the annexation of Crimea as illegal and condemned Russia’s actions; Western countries imposed economic sanctions against it. The Kremlin denies the annexation of the peninsula and calls it “restoration of historical justice.”
