Since Trump took office, the State Department has canceled 175,000 visas.

The US State Department reported on August 10 that since President Donald Trump took office last year, the agency has revoked more than 175,000 visas, including those of foreigners accused of committing crimes, writes The Washington Post.

A separate category of visas revoked included individuals who had spoken favorably about the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the State Department noted. Furthermore, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio personally revoked the visas of Cuban and Iranian citizens with ties to their respective governments.

The Trump administration has taken a hard line on visa enforcement. This often draws criticism from foreign visa holders and human rights organizations, who claim that decisions are made without sufficient justification or are politically motivated.

Specifically, in March 2025, masked federal immigration agents detained Tufts University student Rumeysa Ozturk on the street after the administration accused her of supporting the Palestinian group Hamas and revoked her visa.

A federal judge later ordered her release from custody because there was no evidence she posed a threat.

State Department officials said they were acting to protect U.S. foreign policy interests and national security.

In January, the agency reported canceling 100,000 visas, and according to updated data, the rate has increased: while previously, on average, about 8,000 visas were revoked per month, this figure has now risen to approximately 10,000.
