US resumes accepting refugees from 11 high-risk countries

The administration of Donald Trump lifts the ban on accepting refugees from 11 countries with “high risk”, but insists on more serious verification of applicants from these countries, including detailed interviews.

This is stated in the statement Department of Homeland Security.

According to Secretary of State Kirsten Nielsen, the time has come to update the list of countries with a high level of risk, since this document has not been revised since 2015, so there may not be countries in the list whose threat is increasing. The list will be reviewed over the next six months, after which the document will be updated every six months.

Nielsen proposed updating the refugee reception program to focus on receiving qualified people fleeing persecution or disasters in their home country.

The admission of refugees from 11 countries with “high risk” countries was suspended in October 2017, when the White House renewed its policy on refugees.

The government refuses to name these countries, but, according to Washington TimesThese include Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

During the time of Trump’s presidency, the number of refugees hitting the United States dropped significantly. This led to a ban on the reception of refugees from all countries, which Trump introduced soon after his inauguration. This ban has been partially or completely canceled several times by the courts, but Trump re-signed similar bans.

In addition, after the end of the ban, the President significantly reduced the refugee receiving quota and introduced more thorough checks of the applicants.
