United States indicted 12 Russian intelligence officers for interfering in elections
US Special Prosecutor Robert Muller has filed charges against 12 members of the Russian military intelligence, known as the GRU, in a plot to hack into the servers of the US Democratic Party during the 2016 presidential campaign of the year.
During the press conference, First Deputy Head of the US Department of Justice Rod Rosenstein explained in detail the essence of the charges, writes The Washington Post.
The indictment consists of 11 points, it describes in detail a carefully planned and executed attack on the information system of the democrats, the implantation of hundreds of malicious files into it, the theft of information, and the laundering of stolen material through nominees election.
US intelligence agencies accuse the accused of creating an Internet persona Guccifer 2.0, as well as the site DCLeaks, which were supposed to serve as a cover for publishing stolen materials.
At the same time, according to the investigation, the actions of these 12 Russians did not affect the outcome of the vote at the last presidential election.
“There is no evidence that the interference affected the vote count or changed the outcome of the election,” Rosenstein said.
He added that US President Donald Trump was informed about the charges.
The investigation found that the Russians interacted with some Americans during the hacking process, but no charges were brought against US citizens.
Müller has been investigating Russia's intervention in the US presidential election in 2016 for over a year now. In February, his team brought charges against 13 Russians for intervening in the elections.
