The Pentagon has included Russia in the list of countries whose services are prohibited from using during space launches. The ban takes effect on December 31 2022 of the year, reports TASS.

The corresponding notice was posted on Thursday by the Pentagon procurement department on the website of the collection of official documents of the American government - the Federal Register. The date of publication of this document in printed form, that is, the time of entry into force of the current restrictive measures, appears on May 31.

It says that Russia is included in the list of states, which also includes Syria, Sudan, Iran, North Korea and China, whose services from December 31 2022 will be banned from using during commercial satellite launches.

“One of the sections imposes additional prohibitions on the receipt of certain services from foreign countries associated with commercial satellites,” the document says. Examples include ensuring security in cyberspace, acquiring materials for the production of satellites, as well as means of launching them into orbit.

Separately, the US defense department is introducing a ban on the purchase of products from Chinese military companies in order to “prevent the entry of harmful products into US weapons complexes, information technology systems and other areas that pose a threat to US military personnel and their ability to ensure the security of the country.” “Prohibit the awarding of contracts to foreign entities related to commercial satellites if such contracts pose an unacceptable cybersecurity risk. <...> New restrictions have also been introduced regarding satellites and satellite launch vehicles, but these restrictions do not apply to launches that will be carried out before December 31, 2022,” the document says.

Thus, from 2023, a ban will be introduced on the use of commercial satellites that are “developed or manufactured” in countries that are included in this list. The ban also includes the use of “satellites launched outside the United States on or after December 31, 2022, using a launch vehicle designed, manufactured” provided by the government or a company controlled by the authorities of one of the countries included in the list. At the same time, the Ministry of Defense does not rule out that if the necessary information is provided, it may make an exception to these rules.
