US accused Russia of cyber attacks on the power grid

The administration of US President Donald Trump reported that the Russian authorities are behind cyber attacks on the US energy system, for the first time publicly accusing Moscow of trying to influence the energy infrastructure, writes Reuters.

Beginning in March 2016 (and possibly earlier), hackers working for the Russian government have attempted to compromise the computer systems of several significant sectors of U.S. infrastructure. Among them are energy, nuclear energy, trade, water supply, aviation and industry, according to a notice issued by the US Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

According to the document, the attacks were part of a “multi-stage invasion campaign carried out by cybercriminals acting in the interests of the Russian government,” and their targets were computer networks of small commercial enterprises. Hackers “installed malware, targeted phishing, and remote access to the energy sector’s networks.”

The document does not mention specific objects or companies that have been subjected to cyber attacks.

Direct accusations against Moscow are talking about stepping up attempts by the Trump administration to contain Russia's alleged aggression in cyberspace.

The publication of the notice coincided with the decision of the Ministry of Finance US to include in the sanction lists 19 Russian citizens and 5 organizations, including the FSB and the GRU, for interfering in the US 2016 presidential election and cyber attacks.

Russia has repeatedly denied allegations of hacking into infrastructure in other countries, and on Thursday promised to respond to new US sanctions.

The implications of cyber attacks reported by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are not clear.
