The United States has appointed a new ambassador to Ukraine and will return its embassy to Kyiv: what is known

The US has promised to gradually re-establish its diplomatic presence in Ukraine as another sign of the country's support in the fight against the Russian invasion. Writes about it NPR.

The news comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Defense Department Secretary Lloyd Austin in Kyiv. Zelenskiy urged the world to send more weapons and support to help the beleaguered country fight back against Russian invaders.

This is the first visit by senior US officials to Ukraine since Russian troops launched their invasion on February 24.

After the US embassy in Ukraine redeployed its staff from Kyiv to Poland ahead of the war, US diplomats will now begin a gradual return to the country, starting with day trips to Lviv and then to other cities with longer trips. I plan to eventually return to the Ukrainian capital.

Blinken also told Ukrainians that U.S. President Joe Biden would appoint Bridget Brink as ambassador to Ukraine. She is a career diplomat and is currently the ambassador to Slovakia. There has been no official ambassador to Ukraine since 2019, when President Donald Trump fired Marie Yovanovitch.

After Yovanovitch's dismissal, retired Lieutenant General Keith Dayton was proposed for the post of US Ambassador to Ukraine, but the appointment did not come to fruition.

What is known about Bridget Brink

Prior to being assigned to Slovakia, she served as a senior adviser and assistant secretary to the State Department's Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs and was responsible for Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. with the BBC.

The current appointment did not come as a surprise to Kyiv: back in early February, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba confirmed that the United States had proposed appointing Bridget Brink as ambassador to Ukraine.

She has been with the State Department since 1996, and her first overseas assignment was at the US Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, from 1997 to 1999 at the height of the war in the Balkans.

Among further appointments is work in Tbilisi during the Russian-Georgian war as deputy ambassador.

Under President Barack Obama, she served on the National Security Council, where she helped coordinate US foreign policy with Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.

Bridget Brink was born in Michigan. She holds an MA in International Relations and Political Theory from the London School of Economics and a BA in Political Science from Kenyon College, Ohio.

The future ambassador to Ukraine speaks fluent Russian and has also studied Serbian, Georgian and French.
