The United States launched the first cyber operation against Russia

According to the New York Times, US cyber command officers figure out Russians who are interfering in the elections and are trying to talk them out of it. Targets are "hackers" and "intelligence officers."

The US cyber command is intimidating individual “Russian operatives” in an attempt to dissuade them from spreading misinformation or intervening in the November mid-term congressional elections, writes RBC with reference to The New York Times. The newspaper learned about the operation from officials who were aware of it.

Employees of cyber commands tell the Russians that the US authorities have established their identities and are monitoring their activities. The interlocutors of the newspaper in military circles do not say how many Russian "operatives" such a conversation took place, they do not reveal the methods of communication either. But other officials say that some of these “operatives” were involved, including during the presidential election of the year 2016.

According to the NYT, this is the first foreign cyber operation that the United States is conducting in order to protect the electoral process. “The new American campaign, according to officials, is being waged against hacker groups sponsored by oligarchs and Russian intelligence officers who are part of Moscow’s campaign to spread misinformation,” the article says.

There are no threats against the Russian "operatives", say sources of the newspaper. Washington’s actions are limited so as not to give Moscow a reason to go for retaliatory actions. But the actions of cyber command are only part of a broader effort to combat “Russian intervention in democratic processes,” the article says. Command personnel are seconded to European countries to help US allies "fight Russian intervention in government networks," the newspaper writes. The article later mentions Ukraine, Macedonia and Montenegro. A high-ranking Montenegrin official told the newspaper that Washington was helping "remove Russian cyber-operatives from unclassified government systems."

Russia is unlikely to crack the counting device and try to fake the results of the voting in the upcoming elections, according to US intelligence, but Moscow continues to spread disinformation and thus try to influence public opinion.

The US cyber command was formed in 2009 year to protect military networks, it is located in the same building with the National Security Agency (NSA). The two structures have a common leadership.

According to the US authorities, Russian interference in the 2016 elections of the year was carried out by influencing public opinion - for this purpose, Moscow spread information and disinformation on social networks. October 19 US Department of Justice filed the first accusations related to the upcoming elections. They were put forward against Elena Khusiyanova - Washington believes that she is an accountant responsible for the budget of the operation.

Khusyaynova, an accountant for the FAN, made a statement that she does not know English and is “a simple Russian woman.” The Foreign Ministry called the US claims "slanderous campaign", the authors of which are trying to "get advantages in cross-party squabbling." Moscow has repeatedly rejected suspicions about interference with past presidential elections.
