US can allocate $ 140 million to Armenia for reforms

The United States is ready to consider the issue of providing financial assistance in the amount of $ 140 million to carry out reforms of the new government of Armenia headed by Nikol Pashinyan. This was stated by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo in a letter, which on Tuesday on its website опубликовал Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

“We are ready to consider the issue of allocating a grant to Armenia through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (created in 2004 as part of the State Department program for developing the economies of the poorest countries in the world - TASS note). But Armenia needs to provide information about the positive changes [that have occurred in the country] in its application for participation in the project,” Pompeo noted in the letter.

On May 9, ANCA representatives appealed to the State Department with a request to provide Armenia with financial assistance in the amount of $ 140 million. According to the authors of the appeal, these funds should be directed to supporting the reforms, which were mentioned by the leader of the opposition forces Nikol Pashinyan. In particular, it is noted in the letter, the funds should be directed to the implementation of programs in the field of science, art, education and information technology.

Earlier, similar financial assistance was provided to Armenia. In particular, in the period from 2006 to 2011, the State Department provided the republic with financial assistance in the amount of more than $ 200 million.

The Armenian National Committee of America is the largest and most influential public organization representing the interests of the Armenian diaspora in the United States.

May 8 in the Armenian Parliament Nikol Pashinyan was elected the new head of the government. 59 deputies voted for the opposition leader, 42 were against. In his speech to the parliamentarians, Pashinyan promised that the new government under his leadership would launch large-scale political and economic reforms in the country.
