Poland wants to host the US military base to contain Russian aggression

The emergence of a permanent US military base in Poland, which received the unofficial name "Fort Trump", was a step closer to reality.

Negotiations on the establishment of the base "are going right this week," said Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Catherine Wilbarger, speaking in the House Committee on Armed Forces, writes "Voice of America".

Wilbarger’s statement coincided with the meeting of the Deputy Minister of Defense for Political Affairs, John Ruda, with his Polish counterpart, at which, according to Pentagon representatives, the details of the “generous offer” from Poland were discussed, as Ruud described it.

Warsaw offered to allocate at least 2 a billion dollars to deploy permanent US forces and assets in Poland, which is a member of NATO, in order to deter possible Russian aggression.

NATO expanded its presence near the Russian borders to reassure the eastern members of the bloc, which Russia regarded as a threat to its security.

“We have come up with a very serious, as it seems to us, proposal, and we are working on some technical details right this week,” said Wilbarger. “We hope that the result of today's meeting will be a very solid basis for further work.”

She added that it would take from six months to a year to produce any agreement on the base.

According to the head of the European Command of the US Armed Forces, General Curtis Scaparotti, the planning of spending on a base will begin no earlier than two or three years later.

Responding to a question about the possibility of a transition from the rotation of US forces in Poland to a permanent contingent, Scaparotti told lawmakers that he "is perfectly satisfied with those large forces that are on a rotational basis", but the permanent base will be "useful."

Negotiations with Poland on the establishment of a base are taking place against the backdrop of reports that the Trump administration is studying a plan that implies that rich countries such as Germany and Japan and South Korea must pay the full cost of maintaining American troops on their territory, plus 50 percent for that the United States provides them with protection.

Wilbarger stated that the idea of ​​“cost plus 50 percent” was not discussed with European allies.

“As I understand it, this rhetoric comes from contacts with the Pacific region, there are no such conversations in my portfolio at all,” she said.

Earlier, Estonian special services stated about preparing Russia for a war with NATO over Belarus.
