New York and Los Angeles strengthen security measures due to threats from Iran

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said late Thursday that he had spoken with senior NYPD officials about immediate steps the department could take to protect key areas of the city from possible retaliation from Iran "or his terrorist allies."

“We will have to vigilantly deal with this threat for a long time,” — posted by de Blasio on Twitter.

The Pentagon confirmed that President Trump ordered the airstrike. The attack on Friday morning at Baghdad International Airport killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Corps' elite Quds Force, and six others.

“At the direction of the President, the U.S. military took decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel overseas by killing Qassem Soleimani, head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Corps, a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization,” — the agency said.

De Blasio made an earlier statement about airstrikes, saying he was worried about the future of New York and the United States as a whole.

After the attack, the Los Angeles police issued a statement saying they were following developments in Iran.

“We will continue to communicate with local, federal and international law enforcement partners regarding any important information. The situation may develop, " — posted the department on his twitter account.

The LAPD added that for Los Angeles there is no real threat.
