The US Embassy in Moscow has not yet commented on the news of Burkov's deportation. Such situations are rare, since Russia and the United States do not have an extradition treaty.

Burkov was detained at Tel Aviv airport on December 13, 2015 at the request of the United States during passport control when leaving Israel. Burkov spent about four years in Israeli prisons. Both Russia and the United States sent requests for his extradition. In January 2020, he pleaded guilty to various charges including fraud, identity theft, computer hacking, and money laundering.

The Burkov family hoped that the Israeli authorities would release him as part of a possible prisoner exchange involving a US-Israeli citizen who was sentenced to prison in Russia in October 2019 for drug-related crimes.

According to TASS with reference to the press secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Irina Volk, the police detained Burkov at the Moscow Sheremetyevo airport.

According to her, Burkov was charged in absentia in Russia. Moscow sought his arrest through Interpol.

According to the US Department of Justice, Burkov was involved in schemes that included the theft and sale of credit card data, most of which belonged to US citizens, as well as the creation of a forum for cybercriminals to advertise the sale of stolen goods and offer criminal services, including money laundering and breaking.

He is accused of involvement in the production and sale of counterfeit bank cards and trading in confidential data of clients of financial institutions.

It was established that the unlawful acts were committed in the period from 2008 to 2015. In 2017, the defendant was charged in absentia with crimes under Articles 158, 183, 187 and 273 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
