The US will no longer require a COVID-19 test when entering the country

The administration of US President Joe Biden is expected to announce that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will lift the requirement for travelers to test negative for COVID-19 when entering the US. Read more about this publication CNN.

The requirement will be officially lifted from midnight (00:01) on Sunday, June 12.

The CDC is lifting the restriction, which the travel industry opposed for months after determining it was no longer necessary based on scientific evidence.

The CDC will review its decision in 90 days, and if officials decide they need to reinstate it, for example because of a new strain, they will.

The official said the Biden administration plans to work with airlines to ensure a smooth transition with the change, but that would likely be a welcome move for most in the industry.

Travel industry officials have been increasingly critical of the demand in recent weeks and are explicitly calling on the Biden administration to repeal the measure, arguing that it is having a dampening effect on an already fragile economy, according to Nick Calio, head of Airlines for America.

The travel industry and some experts have said the policy has been out of date for months. Lawmakers, including Democrats, have also campaigned to end the requirement in recent weeks.

Nevada Senator Katherine Cortez Masto said, "I am pleased that the CDC has suspended its burdensome coronavirus testing requirement for international travelers and I will continue to do everything I can to support our nation's recovery."

In May, White House officials met with travel industry officials who demanded that the Biden administration lift requirements that vaccinated foreign travelers be tested for the coronavirus before arriving in the United States.

Airlines for America said its members, including American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines, are confident the lifting of requirements will lead to more foreigners visiting the US.

The trade association said domestic travel was within 7% of pre-pandemic levels in mid-May, but international travel was 14% behind normal.

United States Travelers Association President and CEO Roger Doe praised the decision.

“Before the pandemic, travel was one of our country’s biggest exports. Removing this requirement will allow the industry to pave the way for a broader recovery of the US economy and jobs,” Dow said.

The industry has been criticizing the rule as outdated for months, and some medical experts have also questioned its usefulness.

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, said it doesn't make much sense to screen people arriving from overseas.
