Two meteor showers will peak at the same time: where to look

An incredible and full of space events, July will end with a twofold twist: two meteor showers peak at the same time. Next week will be the peak of not only the southern delta aquariums, but also the alpha capricornids. Writes about it CBS News.

What are delta aquariums and alpha capricornids

Southern Delta Aquariums are active every year from July 12 to August 23, according to NASA. This year's meteor shower will peak on Monday 27 July, Tuesday and Wednesday 28-29 July.

Under ideal conditions, observers will be able to see about 25 meteors per hour.

Delta aquarium meteors originate in the constellation Aquarius, which, when viewed from the Northern Hemisphere, is in the southern part of the sky. The brightest point coincides with the star Skat (Delta Aquarii), which gave the meteor shower its name.

Meteors are remnants of comet particles and pieces of broken asteroids. The comet from which this meteor shower is believed to originate is called 96P/Macholz, discovered in 1986 by Donald Machholz, and orbits the Sun approximately once every five years.

According to the American Meteor Society, alpha capricornids are usually active from July 2 to August 10, and they will also peak early next week (early August).

This meteor shower is less active and observers will only see about 3 meteors per hour. The average alpha capricornid meteor is relatively slow, but stunning bright balls of fire can be seen in the shower.

Meteora will be visible from the Sagittarius constellation to the constellation Aquila, southeast of a star called 37 Aquilae and west of Alpha2 Capricorni (Algedi).

When and where to watch meteor showers

Delta aquariums will be clearly visible from the southern hemisphere, but mid and northern latitudes will also be able to see a little.

Faint meteors in delta aquariums that lack bright fireballs can be difficult to spot, especially when the moon is present. Thus, searching during peak rainfall will give viewers a better chance of seeing meteors.

And alpha capricornids produce a large number of bright fireballs. This rain will be equally well visible from both sides of the equator.

NASA recommends finding a location with a clear view of the sky and moving away from any light sources. Rain is best observed on Monday, July 27, from approximately 12:20 pm ET until 04:17 am.

If you miss the peak of the meteor showers, you may be able to see them again during the Perseid meteor shower in August. The Perseids, the most spectacular meteor shower of the year, is currently active but will peak in August.
