Password gives aliens the right to temporarily live and, in some cases, work in the United States without fear of deportation. Under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) may decide to provide a password for urgent humanitarian or public interest reasons.

The law does not rigorously define these terms, leaving them to the discretion of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The password is not an immigration status and does not mean that the person has been officially admitted to the United States and will be able to live there.

Urgent humanitarian password

DHS has broad discretion to interpret the meaning of the terms "urgent" and "humanitarian". However, USCIS indicated three important factors that are considered grounds for giving a password to a specific person in the US:

• the applicant will face a high level of suffering if they are not provided with a password;
• the pressure of time, that is, the situation is urgent;
• refusal would adversely affect the well-being of the applicant.

An applicant's situation may be considered an emergency if it involves a strict time frame - for example, if the applicant is in dire need of medical treatment or if they have a family member who is nearing the end of their life. However, USCIS officers may take other factors into account when deciding on a password request.

At the moment (May 2022), the United States has a program to provide a temporary (for two years) password for Ukrainians fleeing the war. It is called “Unity for Ukraine” (Uniting for Ukraine) and requires that the Ukrainian had a sponsor in America. A brief summary of the main characteristics:

• Right to live in the US - yes, for the duration of the password
• Eligible to work in the US - no, individual password programs may be an exception. For example, the program for Ukrainians now provides employment opportunities.
• The right to transport relatives to America - no
• Eligibility for future citizenship - no
• Eligibility for service in the US military - no
• No right to leave the US and return
• The right to benefits and benefits in the USA - only certain types of preferential health insurance, as well as programs for children and pregnant women
• Eligibility for a driver's license and SSN - no

In the US, there are two more types of password:

1.Advance Password - permission to enter the United States for a person who has applied for a certain immigration status, but it is still pending.

2. Significant Public Benefit Parole. This type of password is used when a noncitizen who otherwise cannot enter the United States is required as a witness in legal proceedings involving international drug trafficking or national security matters.

Both involve either simply the right to enter the US, or stay in America for a very short period and for a specific purpose. Therefore, their recipients are not entitled to work, insurance, loans, etc. in the USA.
