Able to defeat coronavirus: official list of antimicrobial agents to combat COVID-19 published

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published a list of disinfectants to help protect against coronavirus. Writes about this USA Today.

According to the EPA, the list of "eligible products for use against COVID-19" was created through the agency's Emerging Viral Pathogen program: manufacturers provided the EPA with data that "showed that their products are effective against viruses that are difficult to kill."

Coronaviruses are so-called enveloped viruses, meaning they are one of the simplest types of viruses that can be killed with the appropriate disinfectant.

“Using the right disinfectant is an important part of preventing and reducing the spread of disease,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “EPA is providing this important information to consumers to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that "disinfectant, diluted household bleach solutions, alcohol solutions with an alcohol content of at least 70% and most common household disinfectants registered with the EPA must be effective."

The EPA says consumers need to follow directions and pay "close attention to the contact time of the product with the treated surface."

The Center for Biocidal Chemistry of the American Chemical Council has published a list of disinfectants called "military products" pre-approved by the EPA "for use against emerging enveloped viral pathogens that can be used during the outbreak of a new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in 2019." The list is “non-exhaustive,” but may be used to “identify products suitable for use against COVID-19.” Full list can be viewed here.
