Ukrainian-made sleeping bag was recognized as the best in the world: why is it so good

Ukrainian brand Mad received the ISPO Award, the premier award in the outdoor gear industry, comparable to the Oscars in cinema. He received recognition for the innovative sleeping bag Turbat Ultar, which was developed by Max Pereginka - a programmer, tourist equipment geek, traveler, and now a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reports TheVillage.

According ISPO Award compete with the largest manufacturers in the world. However, this year it was the Ukrainian sleeping bag that struck with interesting design solutions, weight balance, thermal insulation and convenience. It weighs only 680 grams, and sleeping in it is comfortable in the range from -2 to +3 degrees. In the sleeping bag, you can open the lower part for the legs and walk around the camp in it. This allows you to save additional heat while being in nature.

“Back in 2019, Max met with the creative director Mad Marian Striltsiv in Lviv in an Indian cafe and said that programming is fun, but he wants to design equipment. On the spot, they discussed the concept and made sketches of Ultar: it should be something three-season, very light and at the same time comfortable. And they set to work. There were five samples of the sleeping bag in total, different materials and insulation were tested in Turbat, they were tested in field conditions in the Carpathians, the Caucasus and Alaska, ”the developers recall.

The sleeping bag went on sale in February, a few days before the full-scale invasion, and immediately sold out due to urgent need. So, despite the tourist destination, many Ultar sleeping bags are now warming both the military and civilians in Ukraine. Materials for new sleeping bags are already expected from Japan. They will be sewn in Ukraine using Ukrainian white goose down of the highest quality as a heater.

In addition to all the functional aspects, this sleeping bag, among other things, can impress with its visual design. The color orange is definitely charismatic, which is an added plus for photos of possible Instagram posts. The entry and exit of the sleeping bag is also ergonomically well resolved, and an additional insulating collar enhances comfort. There is enough space inside the sleeping bag.

“Thanks to its small size, you can take it with you on long trips, saving space. Excellent insulation, excellent thermal insulation with low weight,” noted the ISPO award jury.

Numerous small details convinced him to give the Ukrainian sleeping bag an ISPO award.

“The award gives us much more confidence and reaffirms that bold concepts matter. We are not only the leaders of the Ukrainian outdoor market, but we are also on the way to development and entering the global level. For us, the award means another open door to the world,” stressed Marian Striltsiv, creative director of Turbat.

“It is important for us to support the local economy and jobs – we see this as part of our responsibility,” explained Marian.
