Trump's adviser organized a “secret lobbying operation” in the United States in favor of Yanukovych

The company, which was headed by Trump’s chief of election staff, Paul Manafort, organized a secret lobbying operation in Washington in the interests of the ruling party of Ukraine, trying to change the opinion of the American public in favor of the pro-Russian government.

Such information is contained in electronic correspondence, which was at the disposal of the Associated Press.

According to the agency, Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates, never informed the US government about their work as foreign agents, as required by federal law.

Lobbyists tried to ensure that the Ukrainian authorities were positively covered in publications such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press.

Their other goal, the AP says, was to shake American sympathy for rival Ukrainian ex-president Viktor Yanukovich Yulia Tymoshenko, who was in prison at the time.

European and American leaders urged Ukraine to free her. Yanukovych was subsequently overthrown as a result of mass protests and fled the country.

Judging from the emails, Gates personally supervised the work of two prominent Washington lobby groups involved in this case, the agency said. At that moment he worked for Manafort, a company that was engaged in political consulting.

Manafort and Gates have been running Trump's campaign since April. They also played a big role in scaling up his campaign.

Manafort and Gates had previously stated that they did not do any work that would require registration as foreign agents. They both refused to give comments to the AR.

From the correspondence it follows that Gates in the period from 2012 to 2014. personally led the lobbying companies Mercury LLC and Podesta Group Inc., organizing meetings between the high-ranking representative of the Ukrainian authorities and senators and congressmen who are members of influential committees affecting the interests of Ukraine, reports AP.

In the letters, Gates explains that this official, namely the foreign minister, did not want to resort to the help of the Ukrainian embassy in the United States to arrange visits.

Gates also directly managed companies that collected information about the rival lobby. Among other things, the correspondence mentions a report on the revelations of lobbyists, in order to determine who was behind them.

In the correspondence there are no details about the role of Manafort, who was the head of Gates in the company DMP International LLC.

NABU published fragments of financial records in the amount of $ 12,7 million, which featured Manafort.

In the meantime, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine added fragments of 22 records made on 19 in different sheets to remove speculations around this topic.
