NSA employee was given 5 years in prison for draining information about Russian interference in US elections

Reality Winner, a former employee of the US National Security Agency (NSA), was sentenced to five years in prison: the court found her guilty of leaking a secret report with information about Russia's interference in the US presidential election 2016 of the year.

26-year-old woman was sentenced to 63 months in prison, without a fine, after the release she will be under tight control for three more years, writes Fox News.

Winner's defense called the verdict “fair,” although this is the longest term of imprisonment ever appointed by a federal employee for disclosing classified information in the media.

Winner pleaded guilty in June 2018 of the year, a year after she was arrested, accusing her of providing secret information to the press from a government agency.

The woman was arrested shortly after the Intercept website published a story that Russian hackers attacked the servers of at least one U.S. voting software provider and sent so-called phishing emails to more than 100 election officials in late October. early November 2016.

The Department of Justice did not indicate that Winner was charged in connection with an article in the Intercept. However, in its material, the site referred to the NSA report dated 5 May 2017. An affidavit about Winner’s arrest also states that the report she drew to the press was dated "approximately 5 of May 2017 of the year."

According to the Department of Justice, Winner worked at a federal facility in Georgia, having access to classified information. It was at this site that she printed a file with secret information, and later transferred it to the media.

Winner served in the United States Air Force from December 2010 to December 2016. She was a cryptological analyst of the language, this position requires fluency in at least one foreign language, but the Air Force refused to disclose what language she knows.
