Hundreds of residents were evacuated from a condominium in Miami: the building was considered unsafe
Hundreds of Miami residents were forced to leave the eight-story condominium building on Monday, August 9, evening after city officials determined the building was unsafe. Writes about it NBC News.
A 137-unit building at 5050 NW Seventh St. fell under the evacuation order, said Miami construction director Asael Marrero.
"We don't think it's safe," he said. “Structural integrity was compromised due to the contractor continuing with repairs for which he did not have the authority.”
Before the evacuation was announced, the city said the building was listed as unsafe in May based on images of property damage. The condominium also did not go through the recertification procedure.
On July 26, city officials, including Marrero, met with residents about the condition of the building. The next day, city inspectors visited the building and determined that the garage needed to be closed due to structural problems.

City officials said the property manager was asked to provide a plan for the renovation of the columns on the first floor of the building, but he never provided such plans, and the building did not apply for a work permit for the renovation.
City officials said officials received a letter from the engineer stating that "the building is safe for current placement while emergency repairs are ongoing."
Marrero said inspectors visited the site and determined that the repairs were "insufficient to support" the columns. According to him, as a result of the check, city officials told residents to leave the building.
“We have a lot of elderly owners here who have nowhere to go,” said Dmitry Asanov, a resident of the house. “Some have COVID-19, some can’t walk.”

According to Marrero, the city is working with residents to help them with temporary housing.
The building was supposed to be part of a hearing at a meeting of the city's unsafe structure on August 20.
After the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida, which killed 98 people, officials began checking the structural integrity of the buildings. The tragedy prompted the city of Miami Beach to immediately arrange a building inspection.
The Crestview Towers condominium in North Miami Beach was evacuated last month after construction authorities determined the building was unsafe.
