Hundreds of congressional members urge trump to tighten sanctions against Russia

A group of US lawmakers, consisting almost of 400 people, are unhappy with the actions of Russia and Iran in Syria. They call on the president to implement a comprehensive strategy whose goal is to eliminate the security threat faced by the United States and its allies.

Nearly 400 members of Congress (79 senators from 100 and 303 Rep. 435) representing both the Democratic and Republican parties signed a letter to President Donald Trump, expressing their concern about the situation in Syria and urging him to increase pressure on Russia Iran in connection with their activities in Syria. “The conflict in Syria is complex, and potential solutions are not ideal, but our only choice is to promote policies that can stop the growing threats to the interests of the United States, Israel, and regional security and stability. This strategy requires a leading role on the part of the United States, ”write the lawmakers.

In particular, according to the authors of the letter, Russia seeks to ensure a permanent presence in Syria, which has already spread beyond the naval base in Tartus.

“Russia has changed the vector of the civil war in Syria, causing damage to the Syrian people. Her troops, air force and diplomatic cover ensured the survival of the Assad regime, ”the document says.

In addition, the letter's authors believe that by supplying Damascus with modern weapons, such as the C-300 air defense systems, Moscow reduces Israel’s ability to defend itself against attacks from Syria.

“The destabilizing role of Russia only complements the role of Iran, since Russia does not show readiness to expel Iranian forces from Syria,” the letter said.

Iran, according to lawmakers, is also working to create a permanent military presence that could threaten US allies.

To address the situation, lawmakers propose a series of measures. Among them is increased pressure on Russia and Iran “in order to limit their destabilizing activities” in Syria.

“We call for full implementation of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) sanctions,” the letter said.

Other measures include supporting Israel’s right to self-defense and giving it access to the resources and facilities it needs to defend against threats, as well as increasing pressure on the Lebanese organization Hezbollah, which is supporting Syrian government forces.
