The new edition presents data on more than 1800 colleges and universities, including around 1400 classified institutions. Educational institutions report most of the data to the publication during the annual survey. In the rankings, colleges are classified into the following categories: national universities that offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, as well as support research, and national humanities colleges, which focus on undergraduate education and at least half of the degrees in humanities.

Colleges are rated on 16 indicators that measure academic excellence, such as class size and average expenditure per student in areas such as coaching and student services. The US News methodology focuses on key student learning outcomes, including the success of the school in retaining students and their graduation.

A new result indicator has been added to the 2019 rating for the year, reflecting social mobility, or the school’s success in graduating students who have received Pell’s federal grants. As a rule, these are students from families whose income is less than 50 000 dollars per year. To make room for a new indicator of social mobility, the college admission rating was excluded from the calculations.

Among the nation's liberal arts colleges are Williams College in Massachusetts and Amherst College remain first and second respectively. Meanwhile Washington University и Lee University Virginia dropped out of the top ten to share the eleventh number with four other educational institutions.

There have also been changes in the ranking of regional universities. Regional colleges, in which you can get less than half of the degrees in the humanities, distinguished themselves by one change at the top of the ranking. Most of the top colleges in the last two editions of the ranking ranked first in the 2019 year: Cooper union in New York for the North, University of North Carolina High Point for the South and Carroll College in Montana for the West. But Calvin College Michigan in the Midwest now shared first place with Taylor University in indiana.

And this is not the whole classification. For example, colleges and universities that usually operate under the control of state governments. University of California-Los Angeles heads this ranking as the number one public institution among national universities. University of California Berkeley ranked second, followed by University of Virginia under the third number.

Another type of ranking is Best Value Colleges, which evaluates the academic quality of an institution relative to the net cost of attendance for a student receiving an average level of need-based financial aid.
