A ranking of the best passports in the world has been compiled: what places have taken our countries

Which travel document opens more doors around the world than any other? This is a Japan passport. Passport Index Henley, which periodically compiles the ranking of the most travel-friendly passports in the world, published its first report in the new decade, writes CNN.

Japan tops the new list, offering visa-free entry (or a visa-at-airport option) to 191 destinations around the world. Asia dominates the top of the list, with Singapore in second place with a score of 190. South Korea and Germany are tied for third with a score of 189.

European countries perform strongly in the rest of the top ten: Finland and Spain are fourth, Spain, Luxembourg and Denmark are fifth, and Sweden and France are sixth.

Meanwhile, the US and UK continue to decline in rankings. They are joint eighth in 2020, a far cry from the first they held jointly five years ago in 2015.

The UAE represents the largest success story in the ranking for the last decade, having risen to 47 places during this time, now the country takes 18th place with 171 points.

“Countries that embrace this new reality of global mobility are thriving, and their citizens are enjoying increased power and freedom to travel, and the many benefits that come with it,” said Dominic Volek, head of Henley & Partners Southeast Asia.

However, the report notes that when it comes to freedom of travel, the gap between countries is widening, and this gap in mobility is now the largest since the index was created in 2006.

The holder of a Japanese passport can freely visit 165 more destinations than the holder of the world's weakest passport, the Afghan one, which offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to only 26 destinations.

Israel took 25th place in the new index - with a passport from this country you can visit 159 world destinations without visas. Ukraine took 43rd place in the ranking with the possibility of visa-free access or access with a visa on arrival to 128 countries of the world, the Russian Federation in 51st position with 118 destinations, Belarus was in 68th place with the opportunity to visit 75 countries without a visa.
