Causes cancer: US recalls huge shipment of diabetes drug

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of a diabetes drug for containing excess levels of a cancer-causing ingredient. Writes about it Fox Business.

Indian pharmaceutical company Marksans Pharma Limited has announced an extended recall of its tablets containing metformin hydrochloride, a drug that helps those with type 2 diabetes lower their blood glucose levels. The recall, which was originally announced in June, was expanded to include an additional 76 lots of the drug.

“Marksans performed N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) testing on identified unexpired batches released into the market and found that some batches contained NDMA levels above the permissible daily intake limit of 96 ng/day, so an additional 76 batches were added out of caution. recall," the FDA said.

According to the FDA, NDMA is a “probable human carcinogen,” meaning it can cause cancer.

“NDMA is a known environmental contaminant found in water and food products, including meat, dairy and vegetables. Marksans Pharma Limited has not received any reports of adverse events associated with the drugs included in the recall,” the FDA said.

The review concerns 500 to 750 mg metformin tablets, which were sold under the brand name Time-Cap Labs, Inc.

The following medications have been withdrawn:

Metformin Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets, USP 500 mg:

• 90 counts: lot number 49483-623-09
• 100 counts: lot number 49483-623-01
• 500 counts: lot number 49483-623-50
• 1000 counts: lot number 49483-623-10

Metformin Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets, USP 750 mg:

• 100 counts: lot number 49483-624-01

“Consumers taking these recalled lots of tablets should continue to take them until their doctor or pharmacist offers them a replacement or another treatment option. It may be dangerous for patients with type 2 diabetes to stop taking metformin without first talking to their doctor,” the FDA warns.

The consumer "should contact their doctor or healthcare provider if they have any problems that may be associated with taking or using this drug."
