Dogs help New York students learn English

A dog may be the best companion for a child. And at the READ center, where children are helped to learn to read, affectionate helpers create the perfect atmosphere.

Havana Bichon named Izzy today is working with 3 class student Elani Velasquez. Elani - the daughter of immigrants from Mexico. She is studying at 57 school in New York Harlem. “I like to read for Izzy, because he always listens to me, and he never laughs at me when I make a mistake,” says Elani.

Thousands of READ teams consisting of teachers and dogs help students around the world. In New York, this program works with 175 guys from 10 schools. Izzy helps students of Hispanic descent who have difficulty learning English.

“The guys we work with in the framework of the READ program were in the back of the class at the beginning of the school year in our schools. “Today, most of them have overtaken the program, and there are those who have even overtaken it,” said Bridget McAlroy, an English teacher. “Children not only practice reading aloud, but over time they begin to love reading itself, retaining its interest even when Izzy does not come here.” In the role of teachers, dogs are just great, because how few of us manage to convince a child to read at home outside the classroom program, but Izzy can achieve such results in just 20 minutes a week. ”

Fluent reading in English is one of the most important factors for success in school. A number of studies have shown that schoolchildren who cannot read at the level of their classmates by the end of the 3 class, in 4 times more often finish school much later, only by 19 years.

Next year, READ plans to expand in New York.
