A giant wave hit the coast of the Sunda Strait on Saturday evening, December 22 (local time). There is evidence that the wave could be caused by the recent eruption of the volcano Krakatau.
Local authorities acknowledged that there is no working tsunami warning system in the country. “The early warning tools we currently have are primarily associated with tectonic, rather than volcanic phenomena,” said Rahmat Triono, head of the earthquake and tsunami prevention center at the Agency for Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics.
The authorities are taking measures to feed the survivors and give them shelter, but help reaches the destroyed settlements slowly.
Against this background, the authorities are talking about a new eruption of the volcano Anak-Krakatau, and therefore about the possibility of a new tsunami.
Researchers observing seismic activity in the region note that a tsunami struck the settlements completely abruptly. Reportedly, the monitoring agency did not issue tsunami warnings even when the waves had already reached the coast.
“It happened so quickly that we were completely helpless. Only a few tens of minutes passed between cause and effect, this is not enough to warn people,” volcanologist Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff, who has been monitoring the activity of the Anak Krakatau volcano since July, told AFP.
The same was stated by President Joko Widodo. Usually a tsunami is preceded by an earthquake, he said on Monday, but this time there was no tremors, so the inhabitants of the coastal villages did not have time to warn.
