Deadly Internet challenge: Americans are asked not to cook meat with drugs
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns consumers against using NyQuil in food preparation, reports New York Post.
Social media users are making videos of meat being coated while cooking with NyQuil, an over-the-counter medicine used to treat flu, cold and allergy symptoms. This new challenge is called "NyQuil Chicken Challenge".
Not surprisingly, the FDA warned that this could have very dangerous consequences - not only when ingested, but also in the process of cooking.

“Boiling a medicine can make it much more concentrated and change its properties,” the FDA explained in the warning, adding that even inhaling the fumes of the medicine during preparation can put a lot of the medicine into your body.
“It may also damage your lungs,” the warning says. “Simply put: someone could take dangerously large amounts of cough and cold medicine without even realizing it.”
It's unclear why the FDA is only now issuing a warning about the problem, as the videos have been circulating online for months. In the clips, people cook chicken breast and pour a large amount of a liquid medicine that contains acetaminophen, dextromethorphan HBr, and doxylamine succinate into a pan of meat.
The FDA noted that the social media trend relied on "peer pressure" with "online video clips of people abusing over-the-counter drugs and encouraging viewers to do the same."
An overdose of NyQuil can cause symptoms such as seizures, severe dizziness, liver and breathing problems, just to name a few, which can be potentially fatal.
Dr. Aaron Hartman, physician and assistant clinical professor of family medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University, explained why this trend is dangerous and can be fatal.

“If you eat this kind of meat, it will be like if you actually drank a quarter to a half bottle of NyQuil,” he said.
“When you cook a cough medicine like NyQuil in a skillet, you cook off the water and alcohol in it, leaving the chicken saturated with a super-concentrated amount of medicine in the meat, which is very dangerous,” he added.
