Pope Francis has been seriously ill in recent months. The pontiff's funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26. US President Donald Trump has confirmed his attendance at the funeral along with First Lady Melania Trump. He announced this on his social network Truth Social.
"Melania and I will be going to Pope Francis' funeral in Rome. We are looking forward to it!" the American leader wrote.
"Prophecies of the Popes"
Following the news of Pope Francis' death, people began to recall the 900-year-old prophecy of Saint Malachy. This ancient document is considered one of the most mystical in the Catholic Church. According to this manuscript, Pope Francis is the last pontiff before doomsday.
In the 112th century, the Archbishop of Armagh, an Irish monk named Malachy, allegedly had a mystical vision. He saw all the future popes of Rome from Celestine II to the last. In total, this list includes XNUMX popes.
On the subject: How news distorts our worldview and ruins our health
The text provides brief descriptions of each of them, partially corresponding to real historical data. The most gloomy prophecies are associated with the last Pope. In translation, the phrase sounds like this: "During the last persecutions of the Holy Roman Church, Peter the Roman will sit, who will pasture the sheep amidst many torments, after which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the terrible Judge will judge his people. The end."
This 900-year-old document was found relatively recently in the Vatican archives. And according to the ancient "Prophecy of the Popes", the end света may come as early as 2027.
The document was first published in 1595 by the Benedictine monk Arnold de Wyon.
Was Francis "Peter of Rome"
Translators of the prophecy have long debated who exactly is indicated as the last pope.
Francis is technically number 112 on the list. Although his name is not Peter, the fact that he chose the name Francis has led to many interpretations. The pope named himself after Saint Francis of Assisi, who is closely associated with prophetic symbolism. Francis of Assisi was born Giovanni di Pietro (Peter!) Bernardone.
Francis also made bold statements about the future of the church, climate disasters, and the world's spiritual crisis, which further fueled the anxiety.
Some interpret the ancient prophecy as a hint that Francis is the last pope. Others believe that the last one will be the one who replaces him.
The end of the world or the end of an era
Most modern scholars agree that even if the prophecy is not literal, its symbolism may indicate the end of an important era in the history of the Catholic Church.
Francis's death may symbolize not the apocalypse, but the end of a centuries-old cycle and the beginning of something new - less definite, but no less powerful in meaning.
According to historians, the first 74 predictions about popes were remarkably accurate. But the following phrases became more vague. There is an assumption that the text was forged at a certain point, or that another person added to it.
At the same time, there are coincidences that amaze even skeptics:
- Gloria Olivae ("Glory of the Olive") - some believed that this was a prediction of Pope Benedict XVI, since the Order of Saint Benedict is associated with olive branches;
- De labore Solis ("The Work of the Sun") is a reference to Pope John Paul II, who was born during a solar eclipse;
- Peregrinus apostolicus ("Apostolic Traveler") - often associated with Pope Paul VI, who traveled extensively.
It is worth noting that this is not the only manuscript that predicts the end of the world.
There is also the Book of Revelation, which was written at the end of the first century A.D. It describes the end of humanity, not the biblical events of the past. Some passages in this book describe drones, flying machines, robots, and even nuclear explosions.
What official sources say
The Vatican does not recognize the authenticity of the prophecy of St. Malachy. It is considered a fiction created in the 16th century for political purposes. However, given the amazing correspondence of the descriptions to real popes, doubts remain.
