How much do drivers of Uber, Lyft and Juno services earn in New York?

33-year-old Al Castillo works as a full-time taxi driver in New York using Uber, Lyft and Juno apps. He usually works six days a week, from Monday to Saturday, 9-11 hours per day. He rarely tries to take breaks, explaining that his earnings directly depend on the number of trips made.

Journalist edition CNBC spent one day with Castillo to find out how he works and how much he earns.

On this particular day, Wednesday, Castillo worked about nine hours, from 7 a.m. to 00 p.m., and earned $16 from 00 trips. Nine rides and $233 in profit from Lyft, 15 rides and $140 in profit from Uber.

“It's a good day,” he summed it up to me, especially since he took more breaks due to the need to work with a journalist. On a typical day, he says, he brings home about $250 after working 9-11 hours.

Castillo is paid for each trip, and its earnings depend on how long the trip is, how far it travels, and whether there is an increased demand for travel or difficult weather conditions, which raises the price of travel for passengers and drivers' earnings.

The driver may also receive a tip. According to Castillo, only about 20% of passengers leave a tip.

"It helps. Any money helps,” the driver admitted.

According to Castillo, the applications do not show how much the client paid, it simply tells the driver how much he earned for each ride. At noon, the 22-minute UberX ride brought him almost 10 dollars.

Castillo said that Uber and Lyft collect about 30% of the amount that the passenger paid. Juno takes the entire 16%, but as an application, it is not yet so popular. During the day, he did not receive any calls to this application, and all the time he went to calls from Uber and Lyft.

However, he has accounts in all three, because, depending on the area in which he travels, one application may be more popular.

In Brooklyn, people prefer Lyft, and in Queens, people prefer Juno, he said.

Castillo earns 250 dollars a day and works from Monday to Saturday, which means that he earns 1500 dollars a week, which is about 6000 dollars a month. He earns an extra amount from 100 to 300 dollars a month using the Cargo application, which pays him for selling products like snacks and headphones to passengers; and Play Octopus, which pays him for a tablet installed in the car, on which passengers can play games, they are also shown advertisements.

This means that he can earn about 72 000 dollars per year on passengers and from 1200 to 3600 dollars per year from Cargo and Play Octopus, which gives him a total of about 75 000 dollars. This is without taxes, and without taking into account such expenses as gasoline, insurance and maintenance, which can be up to 20 000 dollars per year.

On some days, drivers are luckier. On his best day, he earned 540 dollars after nine hours of driving, thanks to price spikes. One fifth of this profit came just from one trip to the airport: “It was snowing. It was about 17: 30 or 18: 00, rush hour. They paid me about 110 dollars. ”

And once after completing the trip for 20 dollars, the passenger gave Castillo 100 dollars a tip, “because it was Christmas.”
