How many teachers get in different states, and why the strike goes on the second day
In Oklahoma, many schools are closed for the second day due to protest by teachers who demand higher wages and education funding in general.
Last week, Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin signed a bill to increase teachers' salaries by 15-18%. But some teachers who haven’t seen a pay rise for 10 for years, believe that this is not enough, and went to the rally.
“If I didn't have a second job, I would have to apply for food assistance,” said Rae Lovelace, a single mom and third-grade teacher at a public school in northwestern Oklahoma who works 30 to 40 hours a week and teaches online courses at private schools.
The three largest school districts of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Edmond are closed on Tuesday due to protests. Some schools offer free meals to students aged 18 and younger, while various churches, religious organizations and charitable agencies provide free services during the day.
Fallin warned on Monday that the state budget is very tight, and in addition to spending on education, there are other critical needs.
“We must be responsible for neglecting other needs in the state, such as health care and public services in the form of Social Security, as we continue to consider additional education funding measures,” the Republican said.
But Democratic lawmaker Collin Walk said that teachers should continue their pressure. Two separate bills that are pending may annually allocate more than $ 100 million of additional funding. Not in the best situation were teachers from Kentucky. Last week, Republican lawmakers changed the state retirement benefits, which reduces benefits for new teachers. Opponents fear that these changes will be an obstacle to attracting young people to the profession.
Republican Governor Matt Bevin has not yet signed this bill, but last week he commented on his support, saying that community workers should “express deep gratitude” to lawmakers who voted to adopt it.
