The MIT Living Wage Calculator estimates the minimum income needed for a single person to cover their living expenses and stay above the unaided poverty line throughout the United States.

The calculator takes into account a number of factors, including the cost of food, medical care, housing, transportation, and other basic necessities such as personal care products, clothing, and household items. It also takes into account the minimum wage in each state and looks at annual changes in the structure of consumer spending.

The last update of the calculator included several changes to its methodology. The calculator now takes into account cell phone and Wi-Fi costs, as well as spending on community activities such as pets, clubs, excursions, movies or museums.

Overall, the cost of living for Americans is rising. They spend more on the food they buy and the way they move.
