How much you need to earn to be considered rich in major US cities

SmartAsset analyzed the distribution of income in America's 100 largest cities to calculate what your family's income should be to be considered "rich," reports Digg.

Census Bureau data shows that the median income of an American family (of three) is now about $65. If a family earns twice that—a minimum of $000—it is in the top 130% of earners in America, that is she can be classified as a “rich” group.

So how much does a resident of large US cities need to earn to be in the top 20 percent of the richest?

10 cities with the highest incomes

San Francisco, California

• Median income for families in the bottom 20% of the city: $36
• Median income in the city: $119
• Median income for the top 20% of families: $250*

Fremont, California

• Median income for families in the bottom 20% of the city: $64
• Median income in the city: $142
• Median income for the top 20% of families: $250*

*IMPORTANT: The Census Bureau does not specify income above $250 per year, so the real median income for wealthy families could be much higher.

San Jose, California
