Discounts on hotels and shopping: AA membership is good even if you don't have a car

The American Automobile Association (AAA) is known for its roadside assistance. But it also offers other discounts that can be worth the cost of a membership even if you don't have a car, reports CNBC.

The cost of a basic yearly membership varies by region, from $38 to $74, and includes many lesser-known perks that can save you money on a variety of things, including discounts on shopping, dining, and entertainment.

The membership will cover the cost of a tow truck, emergency refueling, battery start and locksmith services in case you lock your keys in the car. The Plus and Premier plans are more expensive as they offer advanced bonusessuch as emergency vehicle rentals and extended towing range.

However, all plans entitle you to other discounts AAA. Here are a few highlights:

• Up to 30% discount on rooms at Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott hotels. However, discount rates can vary and are typically between 5% and 10%.
• Up to 20% discount on Hertz, Thrifty or Dollar Car rentals.
• Over 30% discount on electronic brands such as HP, Samsung and Dell.
• Up to 50% off prescription lenses and 30% off eye exams.
• Up to 50% off select theme parks and 20% or more off cinema and theater tickets.

AAA membership is divided into US regions, and each region may offer its own exclusive perks or discounts. For example, AAA Northeast is currently offering a 30% discount on select UPS printing services, a 12% discount on Penske truck rentals, and a 15% discount on home security services.

Select AAA affiliates also offer driver license renewal services to members, which is convenient for anyone who needs to upgrade to a Real ID-compliant driver's license or government ID by the May 2023 deadline.

Of course, whether a membership is truly worth the cost will depend on your spending habits. If these discounts apply to things you're already paying for, then AAA membership can be beneficial for you even if you don't have a car.
