Scandal with 'Russian' Crimea and Google received a loud sequel

Google for Russian users portrays the occupied Crimea as part of the territory of the Russian Federation.

Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valery Chaly turned to the leadership of #Google Corporation to correct the incorrect image of the Ukrainian Crimea as part of the Russian Federation on some Google Maps, reports the press service of the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States.

«In an official letter, the ambassador noted a clear position on the inadmissibility of involving the world-famous corporation and the Google search service in the information war that Russia is waging in the world, spreading disinformation, fake news and propaganda, as in the case of the depiction of Crimea on maps,” the message says.

The press service added that Valery Chaly noted that the situation that has developed with an incorrect image of Crimea on Google Maps, absolutely contradicts the clear and unchanged position of the US Administration, the US Congress and the UN. In particular, in the Crimean Declaration, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo noted that the United States will never recognize Russia's attempt to annex Crimea. The ambassador also noted the continuation of the state of emergency by US President Donald Trump, according to which sanctions against the Russian Federation in connection with the occupation of the Crimea are in force.

The Ambassador also recalled that in a number of resolutions of the General Assembly, in particular “Territorial integrity of Ukraine”, “The problem of militarization of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol (Ukraine), as well as parts of the Black and Azov Seas” and “The situation with human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, Ukraine,” the status of Crimea as a territory of Ukraine is clearly defined, the embassy reported.

“Google representatives have repeatedly noted in public speeches and interviews that Google’s policy is focused on the development of information technology outside of information wars. The Ukrainian Embassy in the United States hopes that the world-famous corporation will continue to adhere to such high standards and will correct the incorrect image of the territory of Crimea on all Google Maps in accordance with international standards and documents, as well as the official position of the United States,” the message says.

Google began to show the Crimea to the Russian territory to users from Russia in 2014, shortly after the annexation of the peninsula by Russia.

However, the issue of ownership of the Crimea, an autonomous republic in part of Ukraine, not just in the center of the scandal. For example, CNN call occupied Russian Crimea, and Bloomberg agency published map, where the peninsula was completely drawn.

Recall that in March 2014, a referendum was held in the Crimea, which resulted in the peninsula becoming a territorial part of Russia, and Sevastopol - a city of federal importance. In Ukraine, the referendum is considered illegal, and the territory of the Crimea is occupied. The world community also does not recognize the new status of the peninsula.
